Balance & Mobility:
I am certified as a Balance and Mobility Specialist through California State University, Fullerton. I have a B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Southern California with emphasis in Health Sciences. I hold a Master Trainer certification for “Matter of Balance,” a fall prevention program sponsored by the National Institute on Aging. Additionally, I am a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine with sub-specialties in balance training, rehabilitative exercise, training for older adults (50+), and group training. I also hold a certificate in Gerontology approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
Martial Arts:
I have been practicing karate and tai chi chuan for over fifty years. I hold a teaching certificate in Tai Chi Chuan and a ranking of eighth degree black belt in Kyokushinkai karate.
I find that martial arts practice informs Balance and Mobility training at many different levels and allows me to employ some elements of martial arts in a therapeutic setting.
Music:
I include music because of the nature of what I teach. Martial arts, Balance and Mobility are integrative disciplines. Integrative disciplines call upon multiple physical and cognitive resources – mind and body – when engaged. The term mindbody is often employed because it includes sensory awareness and breathing as components of the process.
Music is an integrative discipline. The connections between music and martial arts are extensive and have been commented on by numerous past masters reaching far back in time.
